1. Love
Ashton was almost positive that Curtis could not feel love. The only thing that made him think that maybe the smaller man could was when Curtis would panic if Ashton stayed out too long.
2. Hate
Hate was not an emotion Curtis was familiar with. He was always grinning, always happy, because he was just too crazy to stay in touch with anything around him most times.
3. Rain
Ashton didn't care much for rain. He did find a little amusement, however, in watching Curtis just stand in it and laugh like the madman he was.
4. Fear
Even though Ashton deeply cared for Curtis and believed that, on some level, Curtis must care for him, there was always a lingering fear in the back of his mind that one day the crazy man would snap, kill him and add him to his "doll" collection.
5. Empty
Ashton always hated the five "dolls" in Curtis' collection. Their eyes, while looking lifeless and empty, seemed to follow him, as though blaming him for allowing Curtis to kill and embalm them.
6. Fall
Staying with Curtis was like running a marathon. The only difference, however, was that if Ashton ever fell, Curtis would stop and wait for him to get up.
7. Open
Ashton learned the hard way that if he found something in the basement labeled "Curtis' - Do Not Open" he should NOT open it. Ever.
10. Close
Ashton liked being close to Curtis at all times, mostly to just keep an eye on him so he wouldn't do anything that would get them in trouble with the law again.
11. Climb
It was sort of cute how Curtis, even though he was nearing his twentieth birthday, always had to stop and climb on any playground equipment they happened to pass by.
12. Fire
Fire was something S liked. He could sit and watch it for hours. He found that Curtis often reminded him of fire; nice to look at but incredibly dangerous to play with.
13. Pain
If given the choice, S would rather have become like the other dolls, C, U, R, T, and I, because they did not have to go through the pain he had to become like he was. They were dead and he was stuck in an eternal hell with Curtis.
14. Pleasure
Curtis enjoyed a lot of things in life. What brought him the most pleasure, however, was slipping his needle through, preferably human and living, flesh.
15. Smile
Sometimes Curtis' smile looked normal, almost sweet, but most times it just looked insane.
16. Cry
Ashton never cried because he was a man, and men didn't cry. Curtis didn't cry because he was never sad. S never cried because Curtis had taken that ability away, along with his voice, heartbeat, ability to bleed and almost everything else that had once made him human.
17. Toy
S liked Ashton. Not just because he kept Curtis occupied most times and therefore away from him, but also because Ashton treated him like a person and not the "toy" Curtis had turned him into.
18. Happy
Curtis had always been a happy child, which is why his family was so surprised when he was taken to a mental asylum one day for killing eight people in three years.
19. Scar
For a long time Ashton hated the scar on his lower back that he'd gotten from his own stupidity. Now, however, he was quite thankful for it because it was that imperfection on his skin that had kept him alive when he first met Curtis.
20. Angel
Curtis was no angel, but sometimes, when he was sleeping, he looked pretty damn close.
21. Song
Every time "Dance With the Devil" by Breaking Benjamin came on the radio, Ashton would think of Curtis and how he was probably one of the few people who hadn't died a horrible death after coming in contact with the little Devil.
22. Chain
Curtis hated being chained down, forced to stay in one place for a period of time, so they traveled often, going from town to town every few days and never staying somewhere for more than four days.
23. Dance
Sometimes when he worked, Curtis liked to dance about. Ashton would watch sometimes, but never stayed for long, the stench of blood, embalming fluid and a mix of other putrid smells often becoming too much for him to take within a short period of time.
24. Night
Curtis was often calmer at night. Usually, he would sit on the bed and curl against Ashton as they all watched TV in whatever hotel they were in.
25. Day
Daylight brought a lot of relief to Ashton. It meant he'd survived another night sleeping next to the most dangerous man outside of an insane asylum in America.
26. Fool
S often thought Ashton was a bit of a fool for falling for someone like Curtis, but he was still thankful for it.
27. Whisper
When they were alone at night, Ashton liked to whisper sweet nothings to Curtis and loved it when Curtis would whisper them back to him.
28. Shout
Curtis liked to yell, shout, make noise and just be as loud as possible while S never made a sound. Ashton found this rather amusing, thinking the two complimented each other well.
29. Paralyzed
S had never been paralyzed with fear, but sometimes when Curtis got angry for whatever reason, he found difficult to move.
30. Break
Curtis didn't like to break objects, just people. He liked to break them with an axe, machete or saw, then put them back together again with a needle and thread.
31. Stuck
For a long time, S considered himself stuck with Curtis. When Ashton came along and Curtis was no longer so overbearing, however, he considered himself to be more like a traveling partner.
32. Habit
They all had bad habits. S liked to smoke, Ashton would get drunk off his ass once a week, and Curtis liked to murder people. They all had bad habits, but Curtis' was the worst.
33. Listen
There were those who assumed that since S could not speak, he was a good listener. They were wrong.
34. Numb
Once a week, Ashton would find a bar and drink until he was numb. He would often wake up in the morning in a bed, S and Curtis sitting quietly beside him.
35. Shadow
Ashton noticed one day that Curtis would often walk in his or S' shadow. When he asked why, Curtis just smiled his twisted smile, laughed and ran ahead, stopping in the shadow of a tree to wait for them to catch up.
36. Wake
Curtis often woke up before his two companions. When he did, he would watch them sleep for several minutes and contemplate killing them, before deciding against it and wake them by jumping on the beds.
37. Blood
Curtis loved blood. He liked the texture, the temperature, the smell and the taste. He loved the way it looked while it flowed from an open wound and the sound it would make as it splattered the floor, the screams of his victim often mixing with it to make a lovely melody.
38. Valentine
For Valentine's day, the three would always buy each other something. This wasn't a romantic gesture as much as it was just a small celebration of the Holiday and a reminder that they still had each other.
39. Pieces
On those very rare occasions when Curtis would snap and everything would fall apart, Ashton and S were always there to pick up the pieces again.
40. Lullaby
S would often pretend to sleep and listen to Ashton sing Curtis a lullaby when the youngest couldn't sleep.
41. Crush
The day S realized he had a crush on Curtis, he attempted to slit his wrists and hang himself, only to realize that neither of these would kill him.
42. Curse
S often wondered if there was anything that could kill him, aside from Curtis, and if this was a gift or a curse.
43. Moon
Curtis loved a full moon. He would often sit outside, close his eyes and imagine he was a werewolf.
44. Sun
S liked sunny days. He liked the warmth and the light the sun brought with it. He also liked the fact that they made it easier to keep an eye on Curtis, since the madman moved slower in the heat.
45. Belong
For over twenty years, S didn't really belong anywhere or with anyone. While he hated what Curtis had done to him, he was also a little relieved to finally belong somewhere.
46. Friend
Curtis had never had a friend. He was friendly enough, but often said strange and frightening things and had odd mannerisms that scared people off. As a result, he liked to get as much attention as possible from his only two "friends" in the world.
47. Frozen
S often believed that the other "dolls" seemed to be frozen in time. The thought that he also might never age was both terrifying and intriguing.
48. Heat
S didn't usually join in on Ashton and Curtis' passionate moments. When he did, however, he was amazed at how much heat was created.
49. Lies
Curtis talked nearly constantly and about everything. Ashton didn't know how much he lied about, but enjoyed listening none the less.
50. Truth
Curtis would never tell anyone the real reason he embalmed some of his victims or why he never let S leave his side. The truth was, he was completely terrified of dying and C, U, R, T, I, and S were his attempts at finding a way to keep himself alive forever.
